Crossroads of art, nature and architecture, Salsomaggiore enjoys a privileged position among the gently rolling Parma hills.

It is easy to reach from the nearby cities of Bologna and Milan and offers visitors a veritable open-air museum in the unmistakable Art-Nouveau style, which is almost as famous as the local spa waters which made Salsomaggiore so very popular during the Belle Epoque period.

The Art-Decò jewel of the Terme Berzieri spa centre is dedicated to the scientist who first attested the therapeutic virtues of these waters.

4 km from the centre of Salsomaggiore lies the village of Scipione, with its 11th century castle which has just been reopened to the public. 6 km from the old-town centre, the Stirone River Park welcomes children and adults alike with its great variety of flora, fauna and fossils.

Good Food

On holidays and special occasions, the inhabitants of Salsomaggiore cook “anolini” (pasta filled with beef, eggs and parmesan cheese, traditionally served in broth), followed by mixed boiled meats served with tasty sauces; or herb-filled pasta and fried savoury tart, enjoyed with “culatello” ham, “spalla cotta” and “spalla cruda” (cooked and dried shoulder ham) and Parma’s other famous cured meats.

Salsomaggiore has numerous swimming pools, tennis courts, itineraries to enjoy relaxing walks across the green hills, cycle paths and a very popular 18-hole golf course.
