A rich past charms the present

The first nucleus of Monticelli developed around a defence tower in 980 and the town has a long feudal tradition; even Petrarch stayed in Monticelli, bewitched by the charm of this green territory and its hills. Just a short distance away is Montechiarugolo, a late-medieval duchy of the Visconti family, rich in history and dominated by the castle of the same name, of which the only remaining part of the original structure is the fort. Montechiarugolo castle has its very own lady ghost: the white lady, a member of the Torelli family, who appears occasionally at night and is much more discrete and sociable than other spectres who inhabit castles and forts elsewhere in Italy. The main venue for cultural events is the City Hall (Palazzo Civico), built towards the end of the 16th century

La Strada del Prosciutto e dei Vini dei Colli is a food and wine trail running through the valleys of the Parma and Enza rivers, offering delicious opportunities to taste the famous hams, cheese and charcuterie of this region, accompanied by excellent local wines: Malvasia, Sauvignon and Rosso dei Colli di Parma. Don’t miss a visit to Montechiarugolo Castle.


10 May: Fiera di Maggio (May Fair) at Basilicanova. July: “Dall’alabastro allo zenzero” (From Alabaster to Ginger), in the area around Montechiarugolo Castle, every Friday evening from 8 p.m. to midnight.
“Agosto a Monticelli” (August in Monticelli), every Friday evening in August from 8 p.m. to midnight.
4 October: Festa dell’Uva (Grape festival), Basilicanova, a fair dedicated to pressing grapes.
8 December in Basilicagoiano: Living Nativity.
December: Christmas Concerts, local parishes and Montechiarugolo castle.

Good Food

A characteristic ingredient of Emilia cuisine is Parmigiano- Reggiano cheese, together with Parma ham and tomatoes, typical products of the province of Parma.


Montechiarugolo, Monticelli and the other hamlets are all linked by cycle paths which run alongside large green areas set against a hilly backdrop, where history, nature, food and wine entwine with one another.
