Bertinoro and Fratta Terme

The welcoming hills of Romagna

Resting on the gently rolling hills, Bertinoro, an old medieval village which has retained its original structure, with cobbled streets and atmospheres of days gone by, has always been known as the Balcony of Romagna: on clear days, the view towards the sea and hills is spectacular. The charm of its history emerges strongly during a visit to the historical nucleus of the centre, with Piazza della Libertà and the age-old Rocca del Barbarossa, now home to the University Centre and the Interreligious Museum.

Everything is accompanied by a deep-rooted tradition for hospitality which withstands the passing of time, embodied by the ancient Ring Column, which dates back to the 13th century and hosts the great “Hospitality Festival” every year at the beginning of September. Here, in the heart of Romagna, just a few kilometres from the sea, a visit to the spa becomes a real holiday.

Not to be missed

The nearby Parish Church of San Donato in Polenta, dating back to the 9th-10th century, made famous by Giosuè Carducci in a well-known ode and said to have been visited by Dante, is a place unequalled in charm.

June: Vini e Sapori in Strada (typical produce fair); July: blues and jazz music concerts;
August: Summer Music Festival (classical, jazz and contemporary music concerts); September: Festa dell’ospitalità (historical pageant, performances and entertainment);
December, January and February: I Pomeriggi del Bicchiere (events featuring authors, music and tasting sessions).

Good Food

Romagna’s finest vineyard, Bertinoro offers excellent wines: Albana, to be enjoyed together with traditional “ciambella” cake, and Sangiovese, a deep ruby red wine with a strong, long-lasting character to accompany squacquerone cheese and piadina.

Home to the renowned “5 Ville” footrace, Bertinoro is also appreciated by cyclists, who climb the hills during the famous “9 Colli”, racing through vineyards, wineries and hills during the “Gran Fondo dei Vini Bertinoresi”.
